Victorian tech sector tipped to boom over next five years

Victoria is to be a one of the leaders in IT jobs growth over the next five years, ACS revealed at its Melbourne Hub on Wednesday night.

The Victorian findings of the 2021 national Digital Pulse report found the state’s IT sector had shrank slightly last year but is forecast to be the second fastest growing state over the next five years.

Prepared by Deloitte Access Economics for ACS, Digital Pulse forecast Victoria’s IT workforce will grow 5.8% per annum over the next five years, slightly behind Queensland’s 5.9% and above the national prediction of 5.4%.

Currently 246,163 people were working in the state’s tech sector, a slight fall (0.3%) on last year’s number, however Victoria still has the second largest ICT workforce with the gap between NSW predicted to narrow over the next five years.

ACS CEO, Rupert Grayston, said of the ACT results: “Victoria’s technology workforce took a hit in 2020 along with many other sectors, but the state’s IT sector is expected to roar back over the next five years.

“We’re pleased to see that the state government’s initiatives to build the Victorian tech sector are bearing fruit although strong growth will create skills shortages as fields like artificial intelligence, smart cities and advanced manufacturing drive demand for highly-skilled workers.”
